FAQS:

Do you teach at home? Where do you teach?

I am a professional teacher with The University of Alabama Community Music School since 2001. I am a traditional teacher (learning music reading skills combined with learning the instrument), teaching students from the age of 3 through adult levels. I teach all lessons at the Moody Music Building.
at The University of Alabama.

What is your schedule for teaching?

Fall Semester-Monday-Fridays (late afternoon-evening) 4:30PM-5:30M, 6PM-8PM
Spring Semester-Monday-Thursdays (late afternoon-evening) 4:30PM-5:30PM,6PM-8PM
To minimize costs for you, please contact me only if you are willing to take lessons during these times.

Can I have a trial lesson to see if this is a good match?

Yes, the fee is $40.00 for the hour. Students must have their own instrument for the trial lesson. The lesson must be pre-paid in advance with one week notice and there is no refund if the lesson is canceled within 48 hours. Only one trial lesson can be given per student.

When can I register?
The CMS is accepting registration now for the Spring Semester. All lessons will start the week of January 11. Lesson times are assigned on a first-come, first serve basis once the CMS receives your registration.

What are the rates?

The registration forms are online. The semester tuition rates are on the registration forms as well as the CMS policies. Please type the link for details and to printout the form:
http://web.as.ua.edu/music/wp-content/uploads/UA-CMS-registration-form-0910.pdf I am classified as a Professional Teacher rates on the registration form. All students are required to have a minimum of 30 minutes to a hour maximum of lessons.
Violins are not included. Estimated costs for a first semester student whom is renting is $150.00 (4 Months rental, books, rosin, shoulder rest, music stand and metronome) in addition to tuition fees. The estimate for a student that owns an instrument starts at $300.00 or more depending on the quality of the instrument as well as the accessories in addition to the tuition. Due to various sizes of the violins, siblings are required to have their own instruments to avoid injury.

Rent or Own? Which is better?

Students that cannot fit a full size should rent or are not certain about staying in violin for the long haul.

Why is short nails important?

Nails that are short will help your fingering on your left hand and prevent injury. If you desire to have long nails, press ons can work when you are not playing. Students are expected to keep their nails short while enrolled in private lessons to maximize their lesson time.

Can a student enter mid-semester?

Yes, if a space is available. Lessons can be prorated according to when the first lesson is schedule. Please call me for details.

Why does Jennifer Louie want to talk to me on the phone prior to registration?

Jennifer wants to ensure that the semester schedule and teaching philosophy match the students and responsible parties if the student is under 19.

Do I offer recital opportunities?

Yes, in December and in May.
